Elderly people with major depressive disorder may be more likely to suffer severe and persistent symptoms than younger adults with the same mental health diagnosis, a Dutch study suggests.

Researchers examined data on 1,042 adults with major depressive disorder who ranged in age from 18 to 88. The researchers studied how depression developed over time by comparing symptoms at the start of the study to symptoms two years later.

Compared to participants ages 18 to 29, people aged 70 and older were two to three times more likely to still have a diagnosis of major depressive disorder after two years, and to have had symptoms during most of that period, the study found.

Elderly people also took longer to achieve remission or to experience improvements in the severity of their depression.

One theory for why this might be the case is that elderly people are more likely to have risk factors for depression like multiple chronic illnesses, loneliness or unhealthy lifestyles. But depression had an outsize impact on elderly people even after researchers accounted for these factors, said senior study author Brenda Penninx of VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam.

It’s also possible that the aging brain has less plasticity, or ability to rebound from mental illness, due to underlying inflammation or metabolic processes in the body that are different than what’s typical earlier in life, Penninx said by email.

Prevention, as well as early diagnosis and treatment, are essential, Penninx said.

“Obviously preventing is better than treating,” Penninx added.

“Everything that works (e.g. healthy lifestyle, social activities, taking care of one’s health as much as possible) in preventing depression is good,” Penninx advised. “In addition, if a depression occurs, seeking adequate treatment is important because there is - especially among older adults - quite some under-recognition of depression.”

Almost one in five adults will experience a bout of major depression at least once in their lifetime, but the course of these episodes can be highly variable, the study team notes in The Lancet Psychiatry.

Major depression affects people of all ages, but the risk is highest between ages 45 and 65, said Tze Pin Ng of the National University of Singapore, author of an accompanying editorial.

A host of new computer technologies have emerged within the last few years, and quantum computing is arguably the technology requiring the greatest paradigm shift on the part of developers. This is because simulating systems of even a few dozen interacting particles requires more computing power than any conventional computer can provide over thousands of years!

There are many ways to understand why quantum mechanics is hard to simulate. Perhaps the simplest is to see that quantum theory can be interpreted as saying that matter, at a quantum level, is simultaneously in a host of different possible configurations (known as states ) at the same time. Unlike classical probability theory, these many configurations of the quantum state, which can be potentially observed, may interfere with each other like waves in a tidepool. This interference prevents the use of statistical sampling to obtain the quantum state configurations. Rather, we have to track every possible configuration a quantum system could be in if we want to understand the quantum evolution.

Consider a system of electrons where electrons can be in any of say 40 40 positions. The electrons therefore may be in any of 2 40 2 40 configurations (since each position can either have or not have an electron). To store the quantum state of the electrons in a conventional computer memory would require in excess of 130 130 GB of memory! This is substantial, but within the reach of some computers. If we allowed the particles to be in any of 41 41 positions, there would be twice as many configurations at 2 41 2 41 which in turn would require more than 260 260 GB of memory to store the quantum state. This game of increasing the number of positions cannot be played indefinitely if we want to store the state conventionally as we quickly exceed memory capacities of the world's most powerful machines. At a few hundred electrons the memory required to store the system exceeds the number of particles in the universe; thus there is no hope with our conventional computers to ever simulate their quantum dynamics. And yet in nature, such systems readily evolve in time according to quantum mechanical laws, blissfully unaware of the inability to engineer and simulate their evolution with conventional computing power.

It is also possible to approximate an Operating System Container with docker/OCI based containers, but requires running systemd inside the container. This allows an end user to install software like they normally would and treat the container much more like a full operating system.

This makes it easier to migrate existing applications. Red Hat is working hard to make Operating System Containers easier by enabling systemd to run inside a container and by enabling management with machined. While many customers aren’t (yet) ready to adopt micro-services, they can still gain benefits from adopting image based containers as a software delivery model.

SPCs can even do things like load specialized kernel modules, such as with systemtap.

In an infrastructure that is built to run containers, administrators will most likely need SPCs to do things like monitoring, backups, etc. It’s important to realize that there is typically a tighter coupling between SPCs and the host kernel, so administrators need to choose a rock solid container host and standardize on it, especially in a large clustered/distributed environment where things are more difficult to troubleshoot. They then need to select a user space in the SPC that is compatible with the host kernel.

Linux distributions have always provided users with system software such as Rsyslogd, SSSD, sadc, etc. Historically, these pieces of system software were installed through RPM or DEB packages. But with the advent of containers as a packaging format, it has become both convenient and easy to install system software through containers images. Red Hat provides some pre-packaged containers for things like the Red Hat Virtualization tools, rsyslog, sssd, and sadc.
